A Martial Arts Mother's Wish Part 1

Michael and mom left the Karate school and piled back into the car. Michael couldn’t stop talking about his first lesson. He talked about the cool moves that he had done in his first class and he said that he couldn’t wait to get home to start working on his self-discipline.

Michael’s mom smiled and thought that she had never seen him so excited to look forward to doing work around the house. She thought how interesting it was that after only one lesson with Mr. Ames that Michael was actually looking forward to doing work around the house.

There could be some very exciting additional benefits to this program.

She had not expected to hear so much talk about self discipline, respect, trying your best, and not worrying about making mistakes in the very first lesson much less in the whole program.

She was learning what the martial arts were really about and what high expectations Michael would come in contact with.

Michael’s next lesson would be in two days. He put his 3 acts of self-discipline paper on the refrigerator door with a magnet and told his mom, “Mom, I’m going up to pick up my room.”

Michael’s mom smiled.

Over the next two days Michael easily finished his 3 acts of self-discipline and actually did many more things around the house. He was excited about the idea of helping mom keep the house clean. Mr. Ames had told Michael that being a martial arts student meant being on a team.

He went on to explain that being a martial artist also meant doing well on all the other teams that Michael was on. Some of those other teams included his family team, his school team, and his team of friends. Mr. Ames told Michael that being a member of any team meant that he had to be willing to contribute to the team.

Michael seemed to be getting the message.

The day arrived for Michael’s second lesson. He was going to meet privately with Mr. Ames to review the things that he had done on the first lesson and then he would take part in his first group class.

Before the class his mom could feel that he was a bit nervous about being in the group class. He told her that the other kids had been in more classes and he might not know what to do.

Mom assured him that everything would be o.k. and Mr. Ames would take good care of him.

Upon arriving at the Karate school for the second lesson Michael and his mom were again greeted by Mr. Ames. He seemed genuinely happy to see them. Michael’s mom wondered if he was always this upbeat.

Mr. Ames asked Michael how he had done with his 3 acts of self-discipline. Michael proudly produced the paper with the 3 acts of self-discipline on it. Mr. Ames checked it over and smiled at Michael and gave him a high five.

He told Michael, “Young people who are able to move forward and take responsibility for their own actions do better in all things that they do. They take pride in their achievements and their willingness to grow and learn.”

After the brief celebration Mr. Ames asked Michael to stand up and proceeded to take Michael through a review of the things that he had learned in his first lesson.

After this short review Mr. Ames told Michael that it was time for him to join his first group class. Michael could feel a surge of uncertainty and fear pulse through his body.

Mr. Ames seemed to notice some hesitancy in Michael and told him that he was going to do just fine and not to worry about anything. He reminded him that it’s o.k. to make mistakes and just go on the floor and do his best to learn and have fun.

Michael relaxed and he looked like he was now ready for his first group lesson.

Before Michael was sent into class Mr. Ames stopped the class and asked everyone to turn towards him. He said, “I have someone who I want to introduce to you. This is Michael and today is his first lesson. How about if you guys all come over and introduce yourselves and welcome Michael to class.”

All the kids came over and said hello and Michael seemed to grow more comfortable with each handshake and welcoming smile. This was going to work out just fine.

The first group class started and Michael’s mom watched class from the chairs in the lobby.

Michael was asked to do all of the things that the other kids were doing and when he seemed a little stuck with something Mr.Ames or one of his assistants came over to help him out.

Class went on and Michael seemed to be enjoying it. Towards the end of class Mr.Ames brought all the kids into a circle and had them rest on one knee. He said, “Eyes on who?” All the kids yelled back, 'You Sir!'”.

He reminded them that keeping their eyes and ears on him while he talked was essential to helping them learn. He went on to say that looking and listening were skills that everyone should practice and get good at. He reminded the kids that developing focus was like anything else in that in order to get good at it they would have to practice.

When he was done talking he asked Michael to stand up. He brought Michael in front of the group and announced that Michael had done the things necessary for him to earn his white belt. He reached into his Karate uniform and brought out Michael’s white belt.

He had Michael face the other kids and tied the belt around Michael’s waist. The other kids in the group gave Michael a round of applause and Michael smiled from ear to ear.

Michael’s mom smiled too. She was proud of her son.
