A Martial Arts Mother's Wish Part 1

Once upon a time in a small Midwestern town a mother looked out of her front window at the snow softly falling on the frozen trees and dreamed about her only son.

Her son was now in his later 20’s, owned his own successful business, was happily married, and had a healthy, energetic 2 year old little boy of his own.

Her thoughts and dreams were like those of other mothers in places all around the world, dreams of their children growing strong and healthy and living lives filled with good fortune, wonderful friendships, life long health, and meaningful accomplishment.

She remembered the times when her son was still young and the many wonderful memories that they had together. She saw his smiles and his boundless enthusiasm as he navigated through the countless adventures of his childhood.

She remembered the joys as well as the tears of those early years. She remembered the many questions and the occasional bumps and scars along the way as her son was always looking for his next adventure.

She thought about her son and those fond memories and a smile came to her face and to her heart.

As she continued to look out of her window at the winter landscape her mind drifted back again to a particular story when her son was 7 years old.

Michael had come home from school that day and ran through the door with a single sheet of paper held high in the air. He started to talk in a fast, excited voice but she couldn’t understand a word he said.

She reached out and touched him by the shoulder and asked him to sit down and slow down.

Michael eventually caught himself and was able to slow down. Slowing down and focusing were things that Michael often times battled with. He had a habit of wanting to do too much all at one time. He had a hard time focusing on the work in front of him.

After Michael got himself to talk in such a way that his mother could understand he went on to exclaim, “Mom we had a guest today at school. The guy that came into school talked to us and showed us some really cool moves. He was a Karate guy and he even had some of the kids in our school help him with his show.”

Michael went on to say, “Mom it was so neat and Karate is something I’ve always wanted to try. Do you think I can do it?”

The mother remembered thinking that Michael had wanted to do many things in the past and had difficulty sticking with any of them. Her first thought was that his desire to do Karate would pass in time like so many of his other desires.

Time did pass, but Michael continued to ask his mother if he could go to Karate classes. This was rather unusual in that Michael had never been so persistent in the past. It seemed that he had his mind set on giving these lessons a try.

The mother didn’t really know anything about Karate. The only Karate that she had ever seen was the stuff on t.v. where people would fly around kicking and punching each other. She was a little bit concerned. She didn’t want her son to become a bully.

Time went on and Michael kept persisting. The mother decided to ask around a bit to see what she could find. She went to the school and asked the guidance counselor what she knew about these Karate lessons. The guidance counselor said that she had heard some very interesting things about what this type of training did for children

She said that she had heard that kids in her school who had learned Karate seemed to do better in school. Teachers told her that the Karate kids were able to listen while they talked and followed directions well. She had also been told that Karate kids seemed to be more confident. They raised their hands more and didn’t worry if they made a mistake. The teachers told her that it was very noticeable.

While hearing this report the mother began to think that these were things that Michael could really benefit from. He had trouble sitting still and paying attention. He worried about not knowing all of the answers. He felt stupid when he gave a wrong answer because he wanted to do everything right.

To Be Continued…

Hint- It’s a story with a very happy ending. It’s a story that every mother wants to hear for her son. It’s also a story that has come true for 1000’s of kids.
